Myth No. 11: Karfan is Important

Karfan and I bow in apology to the twenty-something readers and commentators that have been taking from their precious time to check on our useless rant-blog. We were not in prison, we were not arrested; rather we were living a false self-importance state of mind!

Two months ago, it became obvious that King Lion the 2nd and his entourage grew weary of people barking at them from all sides. Being completely hopeless towards the big strong harmful dogs barking from the safe heaven of outside, they decided to start beating the dogs that they can beat: the tiny little harmless poodles inside the country. So they started a charitable campaign of filling some empty cells with people who dared to speak out loud demanding reforms and democracy. Some of the names they took are famous or became famous after the rides, like the Atassi seven and their snow-white princess. Some were never mentioned in media and they were known by word of mouth only. Some were released and some were not. So Karfan and I, being lawful disciples of chicken-citizenship conditioning, decided to keep a low profile for a while.

After taking a month and a half vacation from this virtual ranting duty, we realized that there is really nothing for us to fear from. We were fooling our selves by thinking that we are actually so important that a security service apparatus would waist their brilliant informants time to track us down. They would rather let them play card, which would still be doing something more useful to their regime than arresting us.

Karfan is very different from those who have been and are being arrested. Those people are demanding Reform, Democracy, Election, and all sort of big words that three-quarter of Syrian population don't have a blody idea what the hell they mean. But read again this whole long useless ranting essays we posted here: Can you spot any were where Karfan asked for Democracy, demanded Reform, or solicited Free election? No. In fact, that is exactly why Karfan has never been imprisoned all those years despite his never ending bitching and swearing. He does not consist a danger on the regime or the society because he is not asking a thing from them. If anything, the only thing that Karfan might have thought of as a vision for this country was that every male over forty years old to drop dead suddenly of a heart attack.

King Lion the 2nd recently wasted our time on the great recent Baath conference. That time might as well have been time wasted on watching a soccer game between Djibouti and Uganda, it really would have not made any much difference for most Syrians. Before that conference a friend of Karfan whose friend's father was one of the 1300 fortunate clappers-chanters who attended that conference asked Karfan what does he wanted so that he would tell his friend's father to convey to the conference. Karfan said he just wanted one tiny little thing from that conference.
The guy laughed and said: I know, I know: like everyone else, Democracy.
Karfan: Demo-what? no
Guy: Then Anti-corruption measures?
Karfan: No, no, please don't bring my name with anything with Anti- in it. I belong to the Naam (Yes) Generation, we don't know the ward "Anti".
Guy: what is that one thing that you need this very decisive and important conference to deliver then?
Karfan: I want my thirty-seven years back.

Among all the cries, demands and the pressure for so big things as Open-Market, Democracy, Free-Election and National-conciliation and... and... and... to the end of the list of the sophisticated words, I reckon we should not be harassed or imprisoned for asking for that tiny little thing.

"Karfan Exposed"
Here they are.. Six Myths about Karfan and his friend!

Myth 1-Karfan is brave Syrian rebel.
He is not the brave rebel many of you claim he is (to be honest, he did not claim it himself). Most of what Karfan and his English writer friend wrote in their 11 myths was more or less episodes of TV political satires being shown on Syrian official TV for years now. Remember Buq3at Dao', Maraya and the rest of political satire stuff that's coming out of Syrian TV production companies and running on most Arabic networks (including Syrian official TV)?
The brave rebels are the writers/actors/producers who are risking it by making fun of Mukhabarat/Kharawat/Shabbi7a and other corrupted shit-heads without keeping their names hidden and hiding within the blogshpere.
If any of you non Arabic speaking readers watched an episode of Buq3at Dao' (Spot light) you'll notice that its political sarcasm's level is even smarter than that of Jon Stewart's "The Daily Show". Smarter because it does not bluntly states the name of the person criticized, but the actors/directors make sure that everyone of the audience knows exactly who the episode is targeting without mentioning him/her by name. And it's even funnier that way than Karfan and co!

Myth 2-Karfan is Original.
Karfan's ideas read here are uttered everyday in every Syrian home and -for many years now- increasingly in cafes and universities. They are jokes told in schools, material played live on Syrian theatres stages and episodes in Syrian TV series. Karfan is merely a copycat who happens to have a friend with a creative writing style and good control of English language.

Myth 3- Karfan is telling the absolute truth.
Although most of Karfan's views have a factual core, they suffer (as all satire-styled writings) of huge amount of exaggerations, biased generalizations and extreme cynicism, which makes these facts funnier but also makes interpreting them correctly -by non Syrians- an almost impossible job.
I would not be surprised if a year from now some American/British warmonger politician would "sex-up" a dossier about Syria based on Karfan's blog (the same way Tony B"liar" snapped some text about Iraq from the net and used it in the parliament as evidence for Iraq's ability to attack in 45 minutes).

Myth 4- The Syrian people would welcome American occupation/influence.
Following the increasing amount of American "shit-heads" (according to Karfan) visiting and linking Karfan's blog to racist websites (such as faithfreedom.org or wacko-run journals such as reason.com), many US wrong-wing conservatives and neo-cons sympathizers are interpreting Karfan's take on life under the current Syrian's political regime as absolute facts that could be used as justifications for their push for regime-change (or more accurately put "country-screwing") a la Iraq. (By American shit-heads I'm not generalizing about the American people. This term was used by Karfan to describe American warmongers/politicians/neo-cons and alike.. and I'm using it in the same context).
Believe me, if you think that the hell the US occupation is facing in Iraq is bad, wait till you see how Syrian people would rough them up if they think of crossing the boarders!

Myth 5- Arabism is dead.
As I started earlier in this blog and according to my life experience as a young person who has travelled A LOT around Arabic countries and abroad, I'd say again.. Tell this "Arabism does not exist" BS to the Algerian Sunni working in the restaurant in my university in London who gives me bigger portions because I'm Syrian.. or to the Lebanese Maronite girl who keeps telling everybody with joy the story of how "2 Arabs" (me and her) met by sitting next to each other by coincidence in the first lecture of the year.. or tell it to the Palestinian Christian Orthodox student who gets tears in his eyes whenever he see me talking passionately about Palestinian issues.. or tell it to the Iraqi Shiite student who formed the Arab Student Society in Campus.. or to the Saudi half Sunni half Shiite girl who invited all the Arab students (even Christians) to a Ramadan Iftar!
Arabism that young Arabs believe in is not that of the older generation. It's more of a EU-styled entity based on democracy, human-rights and commercial cooperation. Such entity would of course be inclusive of all ethnic minorities (Arabism here has a geographic/historical/cultural meaning not ethnic one). At least this is what the majority of young Arabs I met around the world believe.

Myth 6- I don't like Karfan, he is not funny and I do not agree with his ideas!
Of course he is funny! Who said anything else? And I agree with the core of most of his ideas (after boiling them down to facts and out of the exaggerations/generalizations/biases). I just wish that Karfan would sell his work to the booming Syrian TV production businesses or theatre productions, which are looking for really smart and funny writers to support the plethora of TV political satire productions coming out of Syria since years now. This way Karfan would actually make some decent money out of "bitchin about it" and become somewhat less Karfan than he is right now :-)
I like Karfan's writings to the extent that I would start chanting the Hommus, Falafel, Bndoura slogan every morning.. this helps for a student living away from home and missing the 15 Lira Falafel sandwich in Syria (here in London it's 3 pounds.. that's almost 300 Liras.. and it not even half as good!!!).

I sense a kind of real jealousy in what Mr. Fadi stated and wanted to convince us, or perhaps he wanted to shed some doubts on what Karfan is all about. That is a tactic that both the Pro-Regime, and those Sectarian narrow minded so called opposition use. They both want to destroy any one who speaks facts. The pro-regime want to shed doubts on any one exposing the regime from a non sectarian point of view, and so do those who are immersed and sunk into sectarian hatred that they can never accept the fact that Allawis are truly against Assad, in some cases Allawis are Assad haters a lot more than these Sunnis themselves are, and that these Allawis do hate Assad from a progressisve view point, not pure hatred of the dicator's ethnic background or religious background. Many Sunnis hate Assad and his regime because he is an Allawi, not because of deeper things, and not because he is corrupt and he permitted coprruption, and that he is a ciminal and so are his men and women who are of Sunni and Allawi and even Christian backgrounds. If Assad were to be od Sunni descent, these same persons such as Fadi perhaps would be kissing his feet (though I have no doubt that persons like Fadi are kissing Assad's feet whether he is defending the regime, or he is a religious sunni fanatic hater of all Allawis that he wants to put doubts on the motives and truthfullness of Mr. Karfan. He even wants to insenuate that Karfan is a Mukhabarat because he is an Allawi, or that he is serving the regime by what he is saying exactly as those commedy shows he is speaking about.

God........such are some Syrians that I truly despise them!

LoooooL...

I wake up chanting -as promised- the daily Hommus, Falafel, Bndoura slogan before checking this blog, and.....
God, I only posted few of my thoughts about Karfan's ideas! I didn't think that this would initiate a chain reaction causing the formation of the KLF (Karfan Liberation Front).

Wow.. in less than 24 hours I was called everything between a Baathi defending the regime, a narrow minded sectarian, a fanatic and even an Alawi hater (which BTW was the funniest one by Alawi/bassam)! Even the US military did not like what I wrote and sent a lieutenant to respond (the Fish-shithead-man dude as Karfan would call him)!

First, let me state the following.. I LIKE KARFAN's STYLE.. I said it before and here I repeat it again. I find his ideas and style hilarious. I wonder why people did not believe me in my previous post…. Hmm.. maybe this blog is too sarcastic that nothing written here would be taken seriously.. go figure!
I agree with the core of what Karfan is saying. I just used his sarcastic style to clear things out for wrong-wing/neo-con/warmonger shit-heads who are masturbating to what they think Karfan is saying! I also tried to make it clear that his info are exaggerated and generalized to make things funnier. And yes I heard/seen all of his ideas before as all Syrians did on TV/theatres/cafes..etc. Maybe it's that you are reading this stuff for the first time because it's in English now.. so Karfan for me –and most Syrians- is not original.. but he is still a very funny guy.

There.. now for some quick responses:

1- Marwan.. I would vote for Karfan too as president of Papua-Guinea, or for any other leading political position anywhere. My personal view for example is that he would make an extraordinary Lebanese politician.. he would be the first non sectarian one ever in the history of this sectarian haven. He would definitely kick 3oun/Junblat/Ge3ga3/Berri's sectarian warlord asses out.
Oh and one more thing.. PanArabism is alive and kicking my friend.. if you don't believe in it then that does not mean that other young people do not either. And believe me I was in Syria just before coming for my university studies.. so I do know what I'm saying.

2- Shithead-Lieutenant Jarred Fishman.. allow me to explain what I said again.. the Syrian PEOPLE would definitely rough your soldiers up.. not the corrupted regime. If your FoxNews-crap-filled head still has doubts about that then I give you my word my friend that: if your f***ed-up warmonger wackos in the white house gave you an order to cross the boarder, I'll be the first of thousands of Syrians abroad who will rush back home to kick your asses back to Abu-gharib and maybe further back to Guantanamo.
BTW if you guys are planning to invade my country then please do so before I pay the last installments of the University fees here in the UK.. I'd prefer to take the money back home to support the resistance.

3-Allawi/Bassam.. It seams that I shattered an image of a hero of yours.. sorry about that.. I did not mean to do that man.. It seems that you're starting to idolize Karfan because he is Alawi. It's clear from your response and from your chosen nickname which you use to define your self in blogsphere (Allawi) that you have a sectarian-pervasive mindset. Hear me out my friend: Karafan rules not because he is an Alawi and the Shabi7a shit-heads in Damascus/Aleppo/Latakia..etc do not suck because they are mostly Alawis either. Please do not judge me.. I have never thought in this sectarian way.. and this is why I like Karfan by the way.
One can take a stand somewhere between that of the Mukhabarat/Shabi7a and that of Karfan. It's not the "you're either with us or against us" Bushism BS. There's a huge spectrum in between that would include everyone.
And just for the record my friend.. I have never kissed no one's feet before.. not Sunni, not Alawi and definitely not Baathi feet. Though I did kiss some cheeks, lips and other parts of female bodies.. but definitely no feet ;o)

Hope this clears things out!

Karfan and friend.. looking forward to your next post.

I looked at faithfreedom.org, it's a site run by an Arab former Muslim, dedicated to telling the truth about Muhammad and the real Islam, which is what the terrorists practice. This is not racism, and anyone who calls it that reveals themselves as having an agenda of disguising the truth or in other words, of lying.

Karfan's problem (and that of people in all Islamic countries) is ISLAM. You will never be able to enjoy the 21 century whilst you are trying to revert to the 7th century and your rulers are using this 'religion' to dominate you. No one wants to invade you! We want you to practice your 'religion' in private, stop exporting it to our countries (we neither need or want it), modernise and join us as part of the human race .. think of Syria's former glory before ISLAM!

Mr. Fadi; don't try to be smart for you are not. Evidently, you see nothing beyond your self love. Your two posts showed nothing else but glorifying yourself and trying to put doubts on what Karfan is all about.

As far as what you picked on, which is why I chose allawi as a name here; I chose Allawi as a name in my above post and in another reply I made in another site, that is of "syriacomment", because of one response I saw there from some one who apparently was like you that he made to a poster who posted in defense of the Syrian regime, labeling the defender of the regime as Allawi, and then ranting Allawis as though they are the regime. And I know for a fact that those who write in the defense of the regime are rarely Allawis except for that whore who is Butheina Shabaan.

But for your information, mr. fadi, I don't give a shit about religious labels, and I am absolutely not Allawi in my intellectual beilefs, but only an allawi as to where God wanted me to be born at, and only when I am faced with very smart people like you where it is needed to crush them in the language they most understand, the direct sectarian language.

RELAAAAAXXXX, and just enjoy the freakin blog man!

And Fadi, Panarabism is alive indeed, but is like communism 30 years ago. It was alive then, but that didn't make it less of a hoax than UFO (u see the analogy: a lot of people beleive in UFO!!).
And your friends at the University, did it occur to you is that what braught you together is merely the language (and, well, similar shitty circumstances of the countries?)

I must agree with Aphrodite, for here comes a "true" mulism/Moslem expressing his background in the dirty words he seems to be enjoying to prove his point against Aphrodite. Unfortunately, it is ignorance by these Muslims/Moslems, not what Islam has taught them. The Quran is a book that is full of lessons in civility and beauty. However, most people who say they belong to a certain religion do exactly the opposite of what their religion says or orders them to do. The only law that Muslims/Moslems obey of their religion is to refuse to eat pork, everything else that is forbidden to them. they do without the least feeling of shame.

I am Syrian, and Moslem, though I belong to a historically persecuted minority that some Muslims/Moslems do not recognize as being of Islam. Am I proud!, and thank God.

Islam is only beauty to Muslims. To everyone else it is death and slavery, commanded so by Muhammad himself. The true Islam is determined to take over the whole world by force, and anyone who says otherwise is lying or ignorant. Osama is the true Islam, believe it.

The doctrine of abrogation means that all of Muhammad's later hate cancels out his earlier peaceful words. This is the only true Islam, all else is lies. Kaafir may convert, be dhimmi, or die. Muslims who claim otherwise are not to be believed or trusted.

And the person who spoke of Westerners converting, well there are a lot of weak people in this world. Islam tells you that you are better than everyone just because you are Muslim. Small people like to be told these things.

OK this has gone too far.. I cannot understand how my earlier posts were interpreted as secterian/pro-baath/anti-alawi/representing-islam/anti-Karfan/pro-regime/anti-Falafelism.. all at the same time!

2 Myths about me:
1-I'm sectarian/anti-alawi/ pro-sunni/ pro-regime (Bassam)
No, no, no and NOOOOOOOO.

2-I'm posting out of jealousy or to "shed some doubts" on Karfan (Bassam)
I like the guy! I just can't do as you guys do.. all the "bel roo7 beldam nafdik ya Karfan". I never did it in my life to the guys in Qasr el-Rawda and I will not start saying it to Karfan. If I disagree with some of what he said then I'd state my disagreement regardless if it is to some Shabi7a, Mukhabarat, KLF or any other group.

I'll make a few announcements and stop posting until Karfan posts something new!

1- To Marwan
.. well duh!! Of course what brought us together is that we speak the same language and have the same traditions and cultural backgrounds.. my point exactly!
Why else do you think that the Latin American students hang out together here? or that the South-Asians are always found in the same corner in the library? same cultural backgrounds/language/traditions! Regarding the "shitty circumstances" backgrounds in the countries of my friends.. wrong again my friend. We have totally different economic/political backgrounds. Some of these guys come from really really rich families.. some are of modest or "mid-class" backgrounds. We also happen to believe in everything from the far left to the far right in the political spectrum.
I agree with you that the old panarabism has caused many of our modern day problems, but the thing that you do not seem to understand that many young people of the region do believe in something different. You can call it "modern-panarabism" if you want.. even better you can call it Fattoushism, Tabbouleh-ism or Fatte-ism for all I care (if you choose the last one, could you please make it Fatte-bil-samneh? I just hate Fatte-bil-zeit).
These young people I met around the world do believe that this can make their lives better. Try to open your mind a bit and be liberated from old fixed profiles!

2-To Aphrodite and the bunch of like-minded Islamophonic Anonymous(es)
What brought Islam into this discussion is way beyond my mental capabilities as a student!!!!! How would some Anonymous posters on a blog be representative of "what real Muslims are like"?? How would I even be a representative of Muslims? If you think that my (or some other posters) "dirty" and "uncouth, ignorant and paranoid" language is representative of a "true Muslin" then would you say that every vulgarity-uttering alcohol-sucking American for example is a representative of a Christian faith just because he was born Christian?!?!? Or does every Jewish Israeli soldier shooting children in the head represents the Jewish religion?!?!?
If you want to know if I'm representing Islam, Christianity or Judaism then I'll give you these few facts about myself: My name "Fadi" is one of the names of Jesus Christ in Arabic.. I live in a Jewish neighbourhood in a big Syrian city who has a majority of Muslims. My closest group of friends back in school were 2 Alawi, 3 Greek Orthodox, 1 Druze, 5 Sunnis, 1 Catholic, 3 Kurds, 1 Assyrian, 3 Armenians and 2 pair of green and red striped socks that I usually wear on my hands to have a conversation with.
And by the way, I'm just your typical next door Syrian!

…This would keep this Foxnewsed-wrong-winged lady puzzled for a few days, don’t you think?

3- Bassam/Alawi/Anonymous 27/6/05 00:30
I'm also proud of your Alawi backgrounds, as I'm proud of Christian and Muslim backgrounds in my land which is privileged to be the cradle of civilizations and religions (despite that it is a fact that makes Karfan feels schizophrenic!)

4-Anonymous 26/6/05 14:53
I can start my own blog, but no neo-con-wrong-wing racist would link to it or even read it. They are only fishing for any criticisms we make about our selves to use it as justifications for their narrow-minded and trigger-happy pervasive ideology. Going to websites they visit is the only way to confront them.
Bassam.. I can read your mind now: NO I'm not blaming Karfan for that and I hope that he never stops blogging despite these shitheads.

5- This last one is for Karfan and his English writing friend.
Dear Karfan and co,
First let me apologize for interfering in your blog like I did.
The thing is: Although I read/watched many of your ideas in el-Domary and Buq3at Dao', I was enjoying reading your blog in English for a change. I was enjoying it so much until these wrong-wing/neo-con "shitheads" (to use your term) started using it as a tool to justify their twisted ignorant perception of the region, its culture and its religious beliefs in both their media and the blogosphere.
I still believe that you would make a good living "bitchin about it" if you sell your material to political satires on print/TV/theatre. The Syrian people would enjoy it more and I'm sure that it would make a difference in the long run back home.
Yes people around the world need to know, but not everyone is reading your posts for fun or for trying to understand the situation (look at the bunch of Shitheads/Islamophobes/Sectarians/racists infesting this post for example.. and this might only be the start). I thought that these people needed to know the facts (as I see them at least) as well as read the exaggerated/generalized funny comments of yours. I tried to keep the mood in my posts as sarcastic as possible to follow your blog's path.
Again, I apologize if I offended anyone. Just trying to express my ideas.
Karfan.. If you don't want me to post anymore just mention it in your next post and puff.. I'm gone!

Keep on bloging my friend.. looking forward to more funny material.

Damn.. it's raining again here.. GOD it's almost JULY… I really miss summer back home!

Sorry to tease you foul-mouth anonymous boy(s) but i will leave you to it now. You have already made complete fool(s) of yourself(ves).

p.s. why don't you identify yourself(ves)? may i suggest d***head one, two, etc.

The parting comment I leave to our common compatriot and hero Karfan:

Myth No 9 - We evolve

"Although Karfan was a bit upset about it at the time, later when
he thought about the whole matter he decided that these foreigners
might be very right indeed! We have not evolved an inch. Evolution
means that a person in the twenty first century should think differently
from someone who lives in the tenth century. But unfortunately, if there
were a time-machine that could transfer all of us here in Syria to the tenth
century, there would be very few who would take more than two hours to adapt
fully to that environment.

Karfan finds it alright to respect Islam, Christianity, Alawism, Durzism,
etc... at the times when they emerged and respect those who brought those new
ideas to the open. But he cannot figure out why one should give a damn bit of
respect to people who are still believing in the exact same things more than a thousand years later without trying to change the slightest detail. As he puts it in his own words: In the period between when Ibn Nusayr came up with the Alawie religion idea in the ninth century and today, there must have been some worms that evolved and developed wings and became able to fly. Meanwhile, not a word has changed in our books or a thought in our minds"

Fadi, I don't think people are arguing that pan-arabism doesn't exist...just that it's useless and weak and serves no good purpose for an individual Arab.

Please, your long "let me teach you people" posts are distracting from the other discussions, which are often quite interesting. And your arguments are condescending, I would think most especially towards those Syrians who root Karfon on. Seems like lots of folks living under similar regimes agree w/ much of what he says and appreciate him saying it. And Syrians seem to think he's right about their national character and national mood.

As to his originality...this is strikingly original even if the ideas have been expressed in other regional satire. And haven't we heard from muslims and others IN Syria and Lebanon and Egypt and everywhere else that they think it's fantastic, even from people that disagree on certain points of emphasis?

And don't get too cocky about destroying the American military...you're either full of hate or you're insane. That kind of nationalism, those threats...it's so depressing. They surely wouldn't be welcome, but don't kid yourself.

Anyway you should let Karfan do this thing and don't try to augment it or make it more appropriate for stupid western minds who might make improper use of it. It's fantastic as it stands, let it stand.

I agree w/ one thing, though: faithfreedom is freaky...certainly doesn't belong in this debate.

So maybe you and Aphrodite can both stop using this site for self-promotional purposes?

Also, to everyone: can we all leave most of the cussing to Karfan and Friend? They do it more funny.

Poor Arabism." Karfan, why do you say that Arabism is dying in blogs? What kind of effect have blogs had on the political consciousness? Anybody else have thoughts/opinions?

2/7/05 19:16

I think what Karfan meant was the final home for Arabism, or expressing Arabism or any other political consciousness freely exists in blogs...the question is will it die here or rest here for now until it becomes stronger to be expressed elsewhere...just my thoughts.

Arabism is dying because it was not built on a solid ground, and it was shoved in our faces.

For centuries leaders tried to Arabize everything they could find in their way. The langauge, the ethnicity, the race, the education, the culture...etc

People protested alittle bit through out the centuries, but all who protested got killed.

Now the number of poeple who are believing that they are solely SYRIANS - NOT ARABS - is increasing. Because we're becoming educated and we're openning our eyes.

How could we call all the people in these 22 so-called Arabic countries as ARABS? They are: Black, White, Olive-skinned, Blondes...etc In Syria we have mostly fair to white skinned people with many poeple with fair eye colors. so then the Syrian "Arabic" is not a race, or not "REAL ARABIC".

Is it a culture? Syria's culture is so different than other "arabic" countries. our customs and traditions are so different. But they keep telling us that all of these countreis have the same "culture".

is it a langauge? Arabic IS a langauge... but who uses it? Nobody except news and medai.. that's all.
I speak the Syrian dialect of Arabic and I have to speak English with an Egyptian so he could understand me(Egytpians supposedly could speak my language).
I don't understand half of what the Gulf poeple say, and I understand NO WORD from the north African "Arabs".
Yeahhhhh it's the same langauge.

People are realizing that more and more, and then one day they will be able to say that they're Syrians and Syrians only.

If you say that the Arabs came into Syrian before 1300 years ago when they conquered Syria. Does that mean the land was EMPTY of poeple? Or does that mean they killed every single person there so they could make the whole country ARABIC? Both options are not possible.

There were indeed Arabic rulers and there were many Arabic immigrants to Syria. But the same thing happened with the Greek, Roman, Persian, Egyptian rule of Syria.

I'm forced to say I'm an "Arab" because at some piont the rulers were Arabs and that my blood might have some Arabic blood in it. Then according to this theory I should be calling myself "Persian", "Egyptian", "Greek", and "Roman" at the same time.

The whole Arabism is political... It will remain so and it will control poeple until the intellecturals will stand up and reveal the truth.
All we need is better education that teaches the real history of Syria.

P.S. keep up the good work 2rfan :)

Good Lord! We've got quite a tempest brewing here in our teapot, don't we? Wherefor art thou, Karfan?!

"We have to realize that the self-preservation instincts of other societies will drive them to look at all of us as a potential threat and to treat us accordingly."

This is exactly correct. And I do not want to see it come to pass, nor do most Americans. We simply want an end to jihad for good. We want the Muslim world to come into the 21st Century, embrace the rule of law and discard religious government. (And a lot of us would like the Republican Party to do these things as well! We'd also love it if the Democrats would get a clue, or even a grip, but reality intrudes on this fantasy, at least as of yet.) We want to see the Muslim world rise up against the murderers, and prove that Islam is the Religion of Peace we are always told it is. I know that it is dangerous to speak out against the jihad murderers in Muslim lands, but you must, if your people are to avoid being exterminated by the West in self-defense.

And make no mistake: the next large terrorist attack to happen on American soil will unleash unimaginable violence against Muslims in retaliation. God help you if it's atomic in nature, whether nuke or dirty bomb. Our leftist appeasers will be shouted down, if not worse. Either Muslims can start dealing harshly with the jihad murderers, or us targets of jihad will do so ourselves; the problem is, we can't really tell the difference between jihad-minded Muslim and peaceful Muslim until it's too late, so we're going to have to strike pre-emptively, and a lot of good and innocent people will die.

Muslims know who are the jihad murderers and who are not. If this problem is to have a non-apocalyptic end, Muslims must be the ones to bring it to that end. The West can help, but we are alien to your societies. You must fix this yourselves, Muslim world; you're the only ones who can.

""" We want the Muslim world to come into the 21st"""

We have been in the 21st century for 15 centuries since the prophet (saaws). He predicted all of what you are seeing right now. One of the prediction to still come is about the 440 nuclear bombs, 20 for each Arab country. Then Islam will be raised from the dead, and light shall be shining upon Earth for 720 days and nights. The the infidels will all come to Islam by the millions./

The egomaniac Hafez Assad tried so hard to make people worship him. His statues that are spread in every office, or in every corner in Syria testify to his sickness. You make me cry and luagh!

Syria is important, alright! That is why the plot against it involved many coups starting from 1949, a coup at the time led by General Zaiim, and provoked by the CIA itself. There was no reason for that coup what so ever. The only reason that some French Famous and very important magazine spoke of in the 60s was that the CIA wanted Syria to embark in that path, and to create the mentality of anarchy in the people. They have succeeded of course, and many more coups d'etat took place afterward, I say all in the preparation for Assad to come to power and govern it with the blessings of the US and Zionists. Am I listening to any one else regarding this matter? Not at all. For this is an opinion I have formed throughtout the years, and even before Assad arrived to full power in 1970. I hated this guy much earlier than 1970 for I knew exactly his made, and what he was planning.

Syria is not the power you are imagining. It is not the power the West has instilled in your mind, for Syria can fall within hours, not days at any Israeli or American attack. It has an army that is completly corrupt, an army where officers are traders and work on bribes and commissions. Soldiers are exploited to the maximum, not only the low life they live, but also in their pocket books where they have to bribe continuously their officers. Syria is destroyed completly, and it ranks at the bottom of 3rd world countries. Those you are praising have stolen the national treasure of Syria, and became the billionaires them sevles. Socialists, ha? Socialists?

A man who was the minister of defense in 1967, who did not show the courage at that time to say teh least, and not to accuse him of treason (which I believe he committed), this man gave him self a promotion exactly after his failure in 1967, and became Fareek , from Lewaa/ Have you ever heard of such a thing in the history of mankind? How can a misnister of defense get a promotion after losing a big chunk of his country to the enemy?

In 3 years he was refusing to listen to teh party that he belonged to, and change his position as the misniter of defense, he brought his brother Rifaat to the army, and gave him all authority to screw up order in the army and to form Saraya Al Difaa, and to defy all other rules in the country. In 3 years, the Assads committed many abuses of power, and they were responsible to so many of crimes, that teh people were blaming the civilian side of the government, those who wanted Assad to leave. Since he had the army, and kept lieing to the civilians until he took full contriol, brought his coup d'etat in the name of correction. IOf course, the man whoo was committing the crimes is now a correctionist, and some people thiought this was true. He jailed all of his friends, until they all died in prisons. This is cruel, don't you think so? It is known that the USSR and the USA wanted his coup so Syria would recognize UN resolution 242. His crimes, including the Hama massacre were all hidden from the world media by the choice of the US and Western media. They protected him./ This is not because Syria is a supper power as you believe, but because Syria has to play the role they deigned for it, and the role Assad played it right.

Even you, probably thought that he was more intelligent than Saddam (who was also their agent), and people like you thought that the trick or the trap that Saddam was put in in 1990 can not happen to Assad, because Assad is more intelligent, etc... of that BS. I said long ago: It is not that Assad (Hafez) was more intelligent than Saddam, but that the timing of the US plots was different, and did not include Syria yet. We saw how it is easy for them to put a trap to any one, and the Syrian army had to run so fast out of Lebanon. (Syria's supper power did not stand a chance)/

Have a nice day.

Where did you get your information from?

Assad became Fareek exactly prior to the Baath conference in 1968 that asked him to step down.

You probably know nothing about the history of this greatest criminal and most retarded mind on Earth.

The Son of Bitch Joshua Landis made his blog only for pro-Sysrian-regime supporters. He only allows them to post as members of team.

You see how an American is exercuising the same methods the regime does to protect itself from other opinions.

Aren't you ashamed you, the one calling us to visit your site from putting at its entrance the man worshiping words to bow to your so called "Eternal leader", Hafez Assad, and tto state one of his famous words calling people to speak about corruption when they believed him, and spoke up and that resulted in killing most of them, and jailing the rest who are still in jail since 1979?

I never like him for one second. Have you seen his face on the blog? I dont know what he's trying to do putting up such an ugly picture... I dont know what the mofo is trying to do... maybe trying to achieve fame as some "middle-east analyst" through blogs and useless travel?

Syrian are still welcome in lebanon. I often see syrian taxies and syrian workers waiting to be picked up, although much less than before.
The reported beatings of syrians by lebanon are propaganda. The official position of the lebanese gov. is that in all the recent incidents involving syrians none could be attributed to political motivation. Most of them are conflicts among syrian nationals.

Maybe you meant that he'll be checked on the borders.
Anyways I wish he's safe, and I'm worried for him.
He may not need to travel, if he's a techie, he may be a able to post using proxies and encrypted communications (if they dont block these in syria), but he still runs a risk because of the data that will be stored on his PC.

"Syrian Interior Minister Ghazi Kanaan committed suicide in his office on Wednesday, the state news agency said, three weeks after being questioned by a U.N. team probing the assassination of Lebanon's Rafik al-Hariri."

He was not a suspect in the Mehlis investigation (just a witness). He had left Lebanon in 2003.

"WAS HE SHOT IN THE BACK OF HIS HEAD?"
These syrian ministers suicides, like the one in 2000, are very weird.

Hello All:

I am an Alawi from Turkey; my ancestors immigrated from around Lattakia probably at least 200-250 yrs ago. Alawis are concentrated around Antioch, Adana and Mersin in Turkey and they constitute the majority of population at many places. We have had a different historical path compared to our relatives who are currently living in Syria. Although not perfect, the secular regime helped us to improve our lives, however, culturally we are being assimilated and the majority of new generations cannot even speak their native language. The majority of highly educated population are almost obliged to leave their homeland and go elsewhere.

I like this blog, I personally believe that we are very late in establishing a strong and stable worldwide communication among ourselves. I have a proposal: let's establish a website that would be devoted exclusively to this issue. The website would be having more diverse communication formats (forums, blogs, news, wikis....) and addressing the concerns of all Alawis in the world, not only the Alawis in Syria. However everything must be transparent, the website should be open to everyone who wants to contribute, not anly to Alawis. I would like to invite everybody to express their opinion about that. (salahtatli@yahoo.com)

t. wrota:

"I speak the Syrian dialect of Arabic and I have to speak English with an Egyptian so he could understand me....I don't understand half of what the Gulf poeple say, and I understand NO WORD from the north African "Arabs"."

It is really interesting for me to hear that from a Syrian. As I said before, I am an Alawite from Turkey, we do not have the right to officially train our children our native language. But we try to learn it from our dads and moms. I can speak in Syrian Dialect and understand it very well, but as t. said, I have a lot difficulties understanding Egyptians or Saudi people..etc, and I cannot understand an Algerian almost at all. It is curious to hear the same thing from t., who is Syrian Because I was thinking that the reason that I do not understand Arab people other than Syrians was just my lack of official training in Arabic.

Another thing that surprised me very much was the language that I heard in Mel Gibson's movie "The Passion". If you wathced it you would remember that the language in this film is a kind of Syrian Dialect (Aramaic). What was surprising is that I understood most of the conversation without even reading the English translation (note that I am not supposed to know Aramaic). All those things seem just interesting for an Alawi like me who lived in Turkey and began to learn about himself and his culture after his 30s while he is abroad.

I think that t. pointed to very important facts about the "race" element in Syria. Thanks t.

The Problem is, for those who keep asking about Karfan;s absence, that Karfan or his friend used to go to Lebanon every month and post from there. I think his/their ability to travel there has been restrained or cut. Also, the Syrian regime has been adding more people in its jails since they withdrew from lebanon, and perhaps ( I hope not) he/they are jailed.
